‘And to Wrap Things Up…’
Putting a budget-conscious & creative twist on your gift wrap.
When it comes to saving money, it’s not just about getting a good deal on the big purchases. So much about a frugal lifestyle is about the little things that add up. One of those little things that really add up - wrapping gifts! Between birthdays, weddings and coming into the holidays - you can spend a lot on wrapping. I’ll admit I was surprised to find brand new bags & wrapping paper at the Stockton Blvd. Thrift Town. I mentioned it to my mom and apparently, she’s been buying cute gift bags at Thrift Town for years!
But creative wrapping isn’t limited to just gift bags & wrapping paper. There are a lot of other great finds at Thrift Town that make for not only creative wrapping, but are also multi-functional.
I found this covered basket in great shape & was able to make a cohesive gift for a family to enjoy together. A much greener way to wrap, and a cool way to give more of a gift.
For a kid’s present with a bang - themed secondhand gifts with a backpack to put everything else in.
My niece was THRILLED with all her Dora stuff & uses her backpack at school. Thanks Thrift Town!
For the big girls - a little more grown up, but same idea. It’s a cinch to find cute bags at Thrift Town for under $5.00, like this adorable beaded one. You would have spent that much if not more on wrapping paper, but this way, it’s more of a gift, and easier to wrap up!
Other secondhand wrap ideas: silk flowers, vintage buttons for a little extra flair on a package, or attaching glass ornaments to a gift during the holidays with a personal message & date written on them.
It’s great any time you can save money, and make a gift more meaningful all at the same time. Let us know what you think about secondhand wrapping!

I use Thrifttown here in Austin for all my ‘packaging’ needs. I’ve given gifts inside of cookie tins, jewelry boxes, baskets, book bags, totes and brightly colored pillowcases! Way more ‘green’ than wrapping paper which is only discarded. My recipients love the fact that they get an extra gift and can pass it on later.
I find a lot of yarn at Thrift Town SF and knit my own small gift bags. Sometimes the magazine rack is a good source of picture-laden magazines. If a gift is small enough a page from the magazine will wrap it, othewise the pictures can be cut out and embellish a package wrapped with plain tissue or other solid color paper.
This is such a cute idea! I wouldn’t have thought to wrap small items with magazine pics. hanks for the inspiration!
