I love this DIY tank top turned tote bag project. For one, it’s hands down the easiest sewing project I’ve ever done. Two, the end product is not only cute, but useful, especially for people who live in areas where stores are now charging for bags. And finally it’s a great project for tween and teen girls not only for them to keep, but also to give as gifts or as gift bags.
Supplies Needed: Sewing machine, thread, scissors, and a tank top.
Steps:
1. Pick out a cute tank top. I like a lot of pattern and bling around the straps. You may want to try and avoid anything with mesh overlays or silky fabrics as it may get hung up in the sewing machine and may not be as durable as a heavier cotton fabric. I hit up Thrift Town and found each of my tank tops for around a buck or two. Tip: annually Thrift Town has a $0.99 Tanks, Trunks, and Tee’s sale which is a great time to stock up if you use these totes as grocery bags or gift bags!
2. Turn the tank top inside out.
3. Measure how deep/long you wish your tote to be as this will be your guide on where to start sewing.
4. Set your sewing machine to double or triple stitch help reinforce the bottom of the bag, and sew in a straight line across the bottom of the tank top.
5. Cut excess fabric off under the stitched line.
6. Turn right side out, and enjoy your new tote bag!
