RUNWAY TRANSLATION

Most of us don’t look at the craziness that walks down the runways and think, ‘I could totally pull that off’. There are very few people in the world that buy and wear the actual runway looks, but the top designers inspire everyone else who makes clothes for everyday people (those of us who don’t spend thousands on a single item of clothing) and thus: our season’s trends!

So we put together a look at some of the easy-to-thrift trends that you can scope out to add to your wardrobe for fall. We went to Thrift Town and even found a bunch of them. Everything we found - under $5.00 per item!

{ TRENDING.}

SILHOUETTE: 1940′s! It seems that every season, there’s a new throwback inspiration. This year, the simplicity & stunning structures of the 1940′s are IN!

There are so many fun options with this era - take your pick! And since you’re shopping thrift, you’re more likely to find true vintage pieces, and for affordable prices.

. . . . . .

NOW, A LITTLE MUSTARD ON THE SIDE : A lot of this color that we saw on the runway was done in the classy 40′s silhouette, but it popped up other places, in other trends as well. Granted, mustard all over is wearable for only the small percentage of people who look good in the hue (or children who aren’t very tidy eaters).

If you were blessed with the right complexion, you will positively glow this fall in the brilliant goldenrod pieces— runways all over were warmed up with this beautiful color. If yellows really don’t do wonders for your skin tone, try doing the pop of color on the bottom, or with accessories.

We found these skinny jeans for $2.99, and this simple dress for $1.99. Add a chunky sweater & tights to the dress with a statement necklace, and layer up the jeans with heels and a sleek sweater for 2 totally different mustard looks.

. . . . . .

POLKA DOTS : If Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg put the same print out on the runway, then you know it’s a real trend, with a capital T. This is a great example of runway extreme that easily translates into a fall trend for you.

We found some great sheers that can easily be layered with
heavier/warmer fabrics but add that spice of pattern to your look.

These items were name brand, one of them considerably more high-end, but both under $5.00.
Wear together or separate, to add a little kick of pattern & trend to any look.

. . . . . .

RUST COATS : While last year’s It color for outerwear was camel (anyone else feel super washed-out?), for fall 2011 the hue is tuned down a notch, into a darker, more fall-like and way more universally flattering color.

Especially when paired with this vibrant vintage red & black, it’s definitely an intentionally trendy choice.

We found this and a couple other rust colored gems, this leather jacket, surprisingly only $3.99!

. . . . . .

MAXI SKIRT + SWEATER: While it can be tough to work up enough style energy to wear anything other than jeans or leggings on Saturdays and Sundays, the low-key and uber-comfy outfit idea many designers sent down the runway is something worth trying. After all, who knows? The maxi skirt and sweater combo could become your new weekend uniform.

This is a bit more of a glammed up look with the satiny skirts, but any maxi is in style right now. So make it your own! We’re pretty excited about this look. Why? Because both parts of it are whole sections at Thrift Town!

The maxi skirt section has every size, with solid and print options, with the average skirt price of $3.99. Because it’s trendy right now, boutiques are stocking maxi’s like crazy for upwards of $40 each! Same trend, same fabrics, literally 10 times the price. This whole look (above, left) with the comfy sweater, belt & orchid maxi skirt was under $10!

. . . . . . .

BRIGHT PANTS: We saw this look on the runway and off (in the front row!) and filed it away as an easy way to make winter’s dark layers look fresh and fun.

It wasn’t all just red & pink out there - pick any bright color - it’s all about having an exciting focal point to an outfit. But know your body - if your bottom half isn’t your favorite feature, maybe skip on this trend as it accentuates from the waist down. If your legs are your best feature - show them off with some bold & bright!

These lemon yellow skinny-fit pants and 80′s washed grass green skinny jeans were both under $5.00 each. Add in some layers with a dark blazer or vest and some big wedges: ta-da!

. . . . . . .

WORKING GIRL/70′S DRESSES: Give your go-to black pants a well-deserved rest as there’s a pretty new office uniform, ready to roll. More designers than we could count turned out ’70s-inspired day dresses—translation: midlength skirts with long, blousy sleeves—that seemed plucked from the wardrobe of Nine to Five. (If you haven’t seen the flick, add it to the Netflix queue, if only to see Dolly Parton’s ‘do.)

The original tags from the 1970′s were still on this dress!
The colors, the print, the collar, the tie at the waist - exactly what this trend is talking about.

P.S. You can also DIY this look with a 70′s inspired blouse and a skirt! This dress: only $4.99.
