Story Time.
Vintage = history. I love a piece of furniture that has a story to tell, places it’s been. Giving new life to something old is really gratifying, and I wanted this piece the moment I saw it - a project waiting to happen.
Sure this cabinet could use a little love, but it had a great look to it, was made of solid wood and very sturdy.
I thought it was awesome before, and then I opened it…
On both sides of the inside of the doors were these hand-written ledgers - talk about a piece of furniture having a story! I wish the previous owner hadn’t attempted to peel them off.
I have no way of knowing exactly what the ledger was chronicling, but it has definitely had a rich life thus far, and now has the opportunity to continue the journey.
There is no way a piece like this would sell for $69.99 at an antique store. Especially with a ledger that possibly tells how old it is.
While I sadly don’t have room for more furniture right now, I can only hope that someone who will continue to treasure this piece will see it, fall in love and help it start it’s new life.

What a lovely cabinet! I bet it housed trays of slides and/or photos of family vacations. Lake Tahoe, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons, Olympic National Park, Pike’s Peak…..how I’d love to see those images from the late 50′s.
The entries on the ledger sound like they are listing photo records. The slotted shelves would allow for something like the lareg film plates from really antique cameras to stand on edge and be protected from falling over.
Just ducky.
New to the blog so wondering what location you found this in? I think it wod be great to post that info so if someone near it loves it they could see if it’s still available. Sure with my luck your in ca so I’ll be out of luck but can’t hurt to ask
Thanks

I <3 vintage, but there seems to be a item lacking here in SA. What a awesome find anyway.
Neat! This reminds me of a cabinet I have. I have always wondered what its original purpose was. The back of mine comes off though.
It’s funny how when we do little things (like try to peel the paper off of a piece of furniture) that the act might be commented on by total strangers.
I love old furnitutre too. I was surprised to find out that refurbishing the furniture really detracted from its character and value, but reading this story helps me understand why!
Sometimes refinishing an antique decreases its value. It’s pretty awesome that someone left a piece of history on this one!
That seems like it would make a lot of sense if it was for photos. It IS pretty lovely… as are most things with a lot of memories.
This seems to be the consensus on the use for the cupboard. It would have been perfect for that!
Caralulu: Yes, as the main blogger for Thrift Town, I do live in California, so much of what I feature is from stores near me (I have 3!!). This particular find was at the Stockton Blvd. Store in Sacramento. The more I look at it, the more I wish I’d gone back & purchased it myself! But feel free to represent for your area if you see something great, send me a pic of it!
That IS funny. Makes me think about when I donate something that it doesn’t just disappear but it has potential for a new life with someone else that I’ll probably never know about.
Great item! I love to repurpose old radio and record cabinets and this one comes with history, too!
