DIY: LARGE SHAPELESS TOP INTO A TRENDY KIMONO

SHAPESHIFTER

Here’s the original piece, front and back - it has personality, major pattern and plenty of
material to work with. But as a smallish person, it was too much for me, even liking flowy
tops. I wanted to alter this piece to be a kimono-type over piece to go over a solid top.

I put it on inside out and folded the front pieces over toward the
sides so they would hang open like the kimono front I wanted.

Then I pinned them down and used my handy little tool to remove
the buttons. I measured to check that both sides were pinned evenly.

Then I simply sewed the edge (with an extra stitch for reinforcing) then cut off the excess.

Not a huge change, but enough that it’s now a lighter breezy over-piece
where before it was too clunky to wear open over anything.

I tried it out with shorts.

Goes great with my celtic knot wrap (see my tutorial posts HERE & HERE)

A huge part of thrifting is seeing potential in the pieces you find,
and being able to make simple alterations to create the look you want.
