It’s nearing the end of summer, and we are stoked about school starting and getting into the swing of all-things-fall. I’m all about maximizing your wardrobe - so I don’t go through my closet and clear out all my cute summer stuff to pack away til next June, I simply reorient my pieces to work for fall. One of my favorite go-to summer staples are maxi skirts & dresses, so I thought I’d share how I mix it up when it comes to Maxi to get the best bang for my thrifty buck.
MAXI SHIFT: SKIRT TO DRESS.
Take a fitted stretchy tube maxi skirt and shift it up a bit to work as a dress. My intern Noelle made this look summer office chic by bringing the skirt up as a top and making it work appropriate with a simple sleeveless collared shirt. Cinch it in with a great skinny belt and throw on some heels - DONE. For the more casual look, leave the shirt unbuttoned or skip it all together.
SWEET MINT CONVERSION:
The last look was skirt-to-dress. Here’s dress-to-skirt. I found this beautiful white maxi dress that white embroidery on the bottom, and triangle-shaped top pieces. Ya know, like a bathing suit. I loved the skirt but wasn’t about to wear the top to the office. Solution: I flipped the top down and wore it as a skirt with a different top. This whole look I got from Thrift Town for under $20 total!
SUNNY SUMMER SWITCH:
This maxi dress is such a fun color, I couldn’t walk out of Thrift Town without it. Especially for $5.99! Going from summer into winter doesn’t mean your fun summer dresses have to go in hiding though. I found this dress at the tail end of summer last year and didn’t want to just throw it in my closet til next summer. Pairing this strapless maxi dress with boots and a thrifted Armani sweater made it an instant fall favorite. Doing all neutral colors with the bright yellow helped to make it less summer & more fall.
MAXI-VEST:
Since it IS still summer weather though, I think you should soak up every last drop of it in style.
This is a shoot I did for a friend’s boutique, and although these particular pieces aren’t thrifted, it was actually kind of shocking to me how much each item retailed for at their boutique when I felt like I could have easily thrifted this look for SO much less.
This is such a fun end-of-summer look: high waisted shorts, solid top and a breezy floral button-down maxi dress, unbuttoned and done as a long flowy vest. We did heels for the shoot, but throw on a pair of sandals and you’re set. I could have done this whole look for under $20 at Thrift Town, easy! Every once in awhile it’s good to remember how great we have it, knowing how to put together awesome looks from Thrift Town for less: this look was over $200 from the boutique. Aren’t you glad you thrift?
