DIY Halloween Costumes for the Little ones
Oh Halloween, how we love you at Thrift Town!
There’s nothing like seeing our customers get creative and shop through every department pulling seemingly random items together for an awesome DIY costume. If you need something fast with no assembly required, we also have racks of kids and adult costumes ready to go, (get there early to get the best selection!) but we have a special soft spot for the DIY-ers of the Halloween season. Here are just a couple SUPER affordable thrifty ideas for outfitting that precious little one for the big candy night.
SPELLING BEE CHAMP
- Black leotard (or long sleeved shirt)
- Black tights (or leggings)
- Black pipe cleaners
- 2 Hangers
- Clear recycling bags
- Velcro
- Yellow tape
- Adhesive letters
1. Using yellow tape, make three large stripes on the black leotard, both front and back.
2. Stick adhesive letters on the leotard (in any fun and random order).
3. WINGS: Take two hangers and mold into the shape of wings. Cover the wings with the plastic bags. Secure around the edges with glue. Velcro to the back of the shirt/leotard
4. ANTENNAE: glue two pipe cleaners to the headband. Place adhesive letters on the pipe cleaners.

RAINING CATS & DOGS:
Perfect for trick-or-treating on a chilly evening! Comfy and warm- bundle them up, and tromp around the neighborhood.
- galoshes
- rain slicker
- umbrella
- stuffed animals (preferably cats & dogs): simply hot glue to the top of the umbrella!
Does your curious little one love an adventure? We’ve gotcha covered.
- white tee, cargo shorts, hat : Thrift Town together for under $6!
- safari stuffed animal : $0.99
- binoculars: TP rolls with thick felt circles between & twine to wear around the neck
- vest: brown bag + stationary envelopes & metal brads.
To the moon and back, this is simple and not a big cumbersome get-up for an adventurous little one who wants to run and play while still in costume. Get creative with the color of the pants/shirt and the shiny tape. Fun to get the little ones involved in making this!
- (White) pants and shirt (find at Thrift Town for under$6)
- 2 Pringles canisters (enjoy eating those!)
- 2 Wine corks (enjoy drinking that!)
- Duct tape
- Glue
- 2 paper party hats
- Streamers (in red, orange, and yellow)
- Silver spray paint
1. Cut strips of duct tape and adhere along legs and around arms.
How To: Make Power Pack
1. Glue party hats to the bottom of each empty canister.
2. Attach the canisters together by gluing wine corks between both. Set aside to dry.
3. On newspaper in a well-ventilated area, spray paint the entire pack silver.
4. Cut streamers into 12-inch long pieces and layer about five pieces on top of one another & tape to bottom of the canisters.

AAAAND ACTION!
Does your little one like call the shots (who doesn’t)? Maybe they should be the director for the day! The great thing about this look is that for the most part, you can get a cute outfit for them to wear again and again, and just add the accessories.
- black pants, tennis shoes, cardigan, black tee & beret: THRIFT TOWN. Easily get all for under $15.
- bowtie: easy to find in the little girl’s hair section of the drugstore. Add a safety pin to the back!
- Bullhorn: glue / tape red construction paper into a cone shape, OR use a big kitchen / shop funnel.
- Seat: Thrift Town furniture section
- Chalkboard: either thrift/DIY it with chalkboard paint and picture frame, or grab a blank chalkboard at a craft store and paint the frame. Put all kinds of cute sayings on it for trick or treating and taking Halloween pics!
