Let’s tackle some easy & economical space saving ideas first since traditionally, a bathroom is a pretty small space and you need to make the most out of the real estate you’ve got in there. I found this first space saver on Pinterest, and it’s simply genius! Mount a cookie sheet (which come in a variety of sizes) to the inside of your bathroom cabinet door, or medicine cabinet. I mounted it using permanent tape. Place a magnet on the back of cosmetics and/or other hygiene items and put them on the cookie sheet. Decorate the cookie sheet however you wish! No more hunting around a messy drawer for your stuff! I found this cookie sheet for $2.99 at Thrift Town. Magnets cost around $1.99…for $5 you’ve just made your life easier.
The second idea is equally genius; take 1 1/2 to 3 inch diameter pieces of PVC pipe and mount to the inside of your cabinet door using a permanent or removable adhesive of your choice. These make perfect holders for curling irons, brushes or straighteners (make sure irons are cool before placing in the PVC pipes). I was able to put two of these in my cabinet for under $1.
Now onto a few simple ways to spruce up your bathroom, and saving space. I don’t know about you, but my dream bathroom resembles a day spa. When I think of day spa’s, for some reason river rocks come to mind. Easily add some earthly rock elements to your space by placing a few rocks around the drain in your sink. Stack them so water still drains when you wash your hands. A bag of rocks costs around $4, or pick a few up next time you’re out for a walk for free. You can also store and display your makeup brushes by filling up a thrifted vase (around $2 at Thrift Town) with stones, and placing brushes inside them.
Trays wear many hats in a household, and it’s no different in the bathroom. Use unique trays to stack towels near your tub/shower, or create an inviting welcome tray for guests. I gave this tray a new life after finding it at Thrift Town San Leandro, CA for $2.99. I applied paint and rubbed it back with wax to give it a shabby chic finish. I rolled hand-towels and placed on the side of the tray and filled the rest of the tray with bathroom essentials guests may find handy such as cotton-balls, Q-tips, and makeup applicators, etc., and place them in vintage thrifted glassware (around $1-$2 ea.). When expecting guests, I always like to provide them with reading material on the area in which they’re visiting, in addition to a bottle of water. You can place this on your bathroom sink counter, or if you don’t have room there, on the guest bed.
I have a confession. I have a mason jar fetish. I don’t know why, but I find them adorable and irresistible. I seem to find a use for them in every area of my home, inside and out. In the bathroom, they make great storage containers…for little items such as hair ties and bobby pins, to everyday items such as toothbrushes. I recreated the below craft in less than ten minutes…that includes the paint job. Find a piece of scrap wood (sanding if necessary). Paint a very thin layer of color onto the board to where the wood shows through a bit to give it a vintage or shabby chic feel. Attach a hardware hook to the middle bottom half of the board. Attach a hose clamp near the top/center portion of the wood (I actually just used a staple gun to attach the hose clamp). Tighten the hose clamp around the mason jar, and that’s it! You’ve got yourself a mini towel hook and toothbrush holder!
Ok, so I couldn’t resist one more mason jar craft! With the lid of the mason jar firmly in place, I placed the tip of a screwdriver in the center of the thin metal top of the lid, and tapped the top of the screwdriver with a hammer to create a hole in the center. Once the hole was created, I used the screwdriver to widen the hole, making it big enough to fit a pump though it (I had a pump on hand from an empty hand sanitizer container). The top of the pump should completely cover the hole made with the screwdriver. Fill the mason jar with soap or sanitizer and you have a cute rustic soap dispenser for your bathroom for around $1!
