DIY Belt Chair Seat

I had quite a few leather belts leftover from a project I did last year creating a belt vase as seen here used in a Valentine’s Day tablescape.

I came across the idea of making a seat cushion out of leather belts and thought I’d give it a try!

Here’s a photo of tools you most likely will need for the project:

I already had the belts, but I needed a chair, so I headed to Thrift Town and found this specimen:

Not the prettiest. I started the project by removing the existing woven seat using a pair of snips and a razor.

I then spray painted the entire piece using chalkboard spray paint. This is my preferred paint choice for a few reasons; it doesn’t require any prep, it’s fast, and quick drying.

Once dry, it was time to start laying out the belts I wanted to use (it’s looks best with variations in color, wear of the leather, and pattern/style I think), in the desired pattern. I chose a basic weave to keep things simple. I simply used my staple gun to attach the belts to the bottom of the chair, and sniped off the excess leather to create a clean look.

One tricky part on this chair was how to finish it near the chair back. I selected a chair that had many spokes in the back. Ideally I would suggest using a chair that had a much less busy back, maybe with only one central back piece or a minimum less pegs. I would have preferred to wrap the entire seat in belts, but had to stop prior to the back as the belts were too large to pass through the openings. I stapled the last belt into place and also used fabric-tac glue to help hold it down since that specific piece was not woven into place like the others.

I think it turned out pretty well, and would look great as an accent chair in a study, or boys room. It took 16 belts for this specific chair. Belts ranged in price from $0.99 to $2.99. The chair was under $10 at Thrift Town.
