Turn two tropical place mats into
a beautiful accent pillow.

Tropical furnishings and accents are very popular this season. I made this tropical decorating accent in under an hour- and for only six dollars! Note:The two pillowcases photographed behind the one I made were purchased for $25 each in Hawaii, and that does not include the pillow inserts

I found these beautiful banana leaf place mats for .49 cents each at Thrift Town. They look great on the table, but they also make great fabric for an accent pillow. In general, place mats are very simple to turn into pillow coverings because they are already cut to the same size, and the edges are already finished for you. You can permanently encase the stuffing by sewing all four sides (like this pillow here), or a zipper can be installed so the case can be removed for washing.

Steps:
1. Choose two place mats of the same set or size.
2. Buy a pillow insert in the correct size.
3. Whip stitch the place mats by hand on three sides.
4. Stuff the insert into the case.
5.Whip stitch on the last side.
6. Find the right spot to show off your new pillow.
