Spotlight: Random Riveting

Okay, so here’s just about the easiest DIY project ever! People have been adding gems, studs and rivets to clothing forever. Craft stores have glue-on, sew-on, iron-on embellishments. The problem is that many of these fall off pretty easily. A more secure way to attach bling is to use studs, but the studs I found at the craft stores and online were mostly heavy, metallic-looking geometric shapes that had a “tough girl” feel. Also, most of the ideas I saw showed attaching the metallic studs in columns and rows instead of in a random fashion. Since that’s not really my style, I set out to find something different and found just what I was looking for - pearl rivet studs! What’s great about these is that despite the name, it doesn’t require a special rivet tool to attach to the fabric, instead just three easy steps:

  1. Make a small hole in the fabric
  2. Insert the rivet base into the hole from the back side of the fabric
  3. Push the pearl “head” onto the base

Plan ahead and buy the rivets in bulk online because it is way cheaper than in the craft stores. Below are my collar, cuff and cut-off projects featuring inexpensive jean shorts ($4.99), pants ($6.99) and vest ($1.99) from Thrift Town!!

You know what, Camilla? It looks to me like you got to combine your creative, artistic ability with a business focus. How cool is that! Have you ever considered windowdressing, set design or even costume design, as in Lion King?
