DIY: beanies turned cozy head wraps

While the East Coast hunkers down for Snowpocalypse, here in California I literally walked to the mailbox in flipflops and a tshirt this morning. It does get chilly-ish here every so often but for the most part, we get the luxury of donning cute cozy items as opposed to serious weather protection. If you’ve followed this blog for any amount of time, you know I love making headbands for my daughter via upcycling, thrifted fabric, and general craftiness. Well, this week I made myself some cute cozies that I could always make smaller for her once I’ve had my fun.

This first head wrap started it’s life as a $0.99
beanie at Thrift Town.
Check out the process:

Bright and cozy, this headwrap literally cost
me $0.99, bit of thread and some creativity.

  1. Start with a solid colored beanie

2. decide how wide you want your wrap and cut it about an inch wider.

3. line up your edges and pin so they stay put. Then cut the ring to lay flat.
(you can reverse those steps if it’s easier - cut, then pin)

4. Sew a single stitch across the top. Remove pins and re-measure on head.

5. Sew ends together to form the main band. Then repeat steps 3-4 on a tiny scale for the accent band on the front.

This wrap also started as a beanie, with different textures on the knit.
I then added a hand-crocheted removable bow that can go on anything.

This wrap started its life as the tie on a thrifted creme-colored sweater
dress. Greatly simplified the process having the “band” part already
complete! Just measured, stitched the ends, and made the cute little bow.

Hands down the easiest wrap of the bunch: literally cut the strip from a thrifted
skirt and tied it in a knot on my head around a fun messy updo. BOOM.

So, for all of us who get to have cute cozy accessories
this winter, it’s not hard or expensive — give it a shot!

Happy Thrifting! — Kari
