THRIFTED DECOR GUIDE
LIVINGROOM LOVELY.
When your livingroom needs a bit of an update and a touch of warmth,
thrifted pieces are the way to go.
For under $50, I was able to bring new life into our space.
This is our big couch. It was given to us by family, and when we got it, we wanted to
freshen it up without paying for an upholstry cleaner to come out. We simply used our
upright garment steamer, and filled the tank with a mixture of warm water and white
vinegar (you can get it in gallon form for household use).
We needed to break up the big couch, so we went to Thrift Town to look for pillows
in complimentary colors, a little lighter than the couch. We loved the pattern and little
stitching details on these.
Cozy and funky, there were 3 tan pillows and one grey patterned one.
Total, we spent under $10. The tan pillows have a zippered side, and we simply
removed and washed/dried the covers in the washing machine. The patterned
pillow got the same treatment as the couch.
For under $10, we found these 2 cozy blankets.
We washed both in the washing machine on hot with a bunch of fabric softener.
The seafoam one went in the dryer, the tan one we line dried so as not to tangle
all the tassels. Lotsa snuggling with these on our couch.
This rug was a FIND. And some work. It didn’t smell amazing when we got it,
and it had been owned by someone with pets. But for $25, the perfect size,
and in a great color for our livingroom, we committed.
— we vaccumed it well, and used the hose attachment to super get everything off.
— then we hung the rug on our back fence, filled a spray bottle with “pet cleaner”
carpet cleaner, and sprayed down the rug
— hooked our hose to the hot water in our garage and sprayed it well.
— let dry in the sun and vaccumed again for good measure. WHEW! Totally worth it.
This lamp was UG-LY. And cheap. I liked the shape but it was a hideous rust orange with
an avocado colored shade. But a lil bit of black spray paint, and some seafoam color for
the shade and it’s now much prettier! And for $1.99, I’m gonna call it a steal.
If you shopped at a regular department store, how many home goods items would you
be able to get for under $50? I’m guessing not an area rug, chic lamp and 4 coordinating
throw pillows. Just sayin’: thrift rules.
