Velvet Haze

I’m obsessed with velvet, and with Thrift Town’s great selection, who wouldn’t be?

I found two great pairs of velvet pants at Thrift Town.

The first pair was only $3.99 and they fit like a glove! Perfect for lounging around.

The second pair was very baggy. The legs were just wide enough at the bottom that I could easily make them into bell-bottoms. I decided to add some of my own burned velvet on the sides to make the legs even wider! Burning your own velvet is really easy; all that you need is some plain velvet, a rubber stamp, and an iron.

Burned Velvet Bell-Bottoms

Step 1: On a flat surface, lay a rubber stamp design side up (the side you would normally ink). Lay the velvet fuzzy side down onto the stamp and spritz with water until damp. Put your iron on a higher setting (but not too high, you don’t want to melt your velvet). Gently press the iron onto the velvet until it is dry. If you need to move the iron it is very important that you do not slide it across the fabric. This will cause it to blur. Repeat step 1 on all of your fabric, space as desired.

Step 2: Cut a rectangle of (now burned) velvet measuring roughly 2/3 of a yard by 1/2 of a yard.

Step 3: Fold the rectangle diagonally from one corner to another.

Step 4: Cut along the fold and you will be left with two triangles. These are what widen the pantlegs from the knee down.

Step 5: Turn your pants inside-out and put them on. Pin them along the seams where you would like them to taken in.

Step 6: Re-seam the pants where you pinned them before and turn them right-side-out. remember not to take them in below the knee.

Step 7: Cut the outer seam from the knee down and sew the triangles into each pantleg.

Step 8: Wear!

I hope that you guys enjoyed reading my blog as much as I enjoyed making it!
