A Change of Plans
Why do I have a buggy full of sweaters at my local Albuquerque, New Mexico Thrift Town instead of party dresses for New Year’s Eve? Well, I found out that my dad, who lives in Ohio, had scheduled himself for hip replacement surgery! I know, right! So I made my plane reservations to head back to the cold and snow that is winter in northeast Ohio to help him in his recovery.
My first thought was “I need some warm sweaters” and my second thought was “Thrift Town!” So I grabbed my 63 year old husband and headed to Thrift Town on a Monday to partake of their 30% off senior discount (ages 60+).
My husband also had a few items on his thrift list:
1. Vest
2. Belt
Luck was with him that day. He found a Club Room blue fleece vest $5.59. As a bonus he also scored a ‘like new’ St. John’s Bay jacket with lots of pockets to put all his stuff in $9.09. I actually found the belt for him $2.99…hanging on a rack with the women’s sweaters. You just never know where you are going to find something when thrifting!
I hurried as fast as I could through the sweaters. Okay, I also stopped at the coats, blazers, vests, workout wear and long sleeved shirts. Oh…and boots too. What can I say?
I finally made my way to the dressing room and had my husband take photos of me while I was trying on my buggy full of sweaters.
First, can we take a moment to admire how cute Thrift Town decorated their dressing rooms for the holidays?
Okay, here goes…
I liked this Calvin Klein top a lot, but I was wearing leggings that day and my husband kept telling me the tops weren’t long enough. I kept trying to explain to him that I would be wearing skinny jeans with the sweaters not these leggings. Ugh…
I came out of the dressing room thinking I looked pretty cute in this tunic top and the first words out of my husbands mouth were “You look hideous.” Um…okay…
I liked this black sweater but it was too big. I feel like a cat burglar in this all black outfit. Oh, if you look in the mirror you can see my husband in the reflection.
So, what did I end up with? Let’s see…
My son and his girlfriend (who works in retail) laid out the clothes. They did a nice job, huh!
I ended up spending around $40.00 and got:
2 sleeveless tops (for layering)
2 button down cardigans
2 tunic tops (to wear with leggings)
1 chunky sweater
Here’s look #1
Coldwater Creek burgundy sleevless top $5.59. J Jill gray cardigan $5.59.
Here it is with the sweater off…
The center of the top is chiffon. The bracelet is from my birthday celebration at Thrift Town. Those red flats are Gianni Bini $2.79.
Look #2
Classic black and white. This white button down cardigan is Talbots $4.19. I paired it with this Ann Taylor black sleeveless top $5.59.
I like the pairing of sleeveless tops with cardigans. It gives me options.
Look #3
This bluish gray Ann Taylor chunky sweater $5.59 should keep me plenty warm in the frigid cold.
Look #4
This Carolyn Taylor red tunic sweater $4.19 passed my husbands inspection.
Look #5
Now THIS Susan Lawrence black/multi tunic top was my favorite thrift of the day!!! It was well worth the $9.09 I paid for it. There’s those $9.99 Lucky Brand black flats again!
I even styled it another way for you.
I feel that now, thanks to Thrift Town (for the warm sweaters) and my husband (for the senior discount) I am ready to face whatever weather Ohio has in store for me.
Darlene Fadem is a wife and mother with two boys in college. She’s OBVIOUSLY over 50, hence the name Thrifty Over 50. She admits to being a label hunter when thrifting, but pleads the fifth to everything else. You can also find her styling looks on her fashion blog for older women whosaprettygirl

Love your blog. Just one question, what do you do with the shoes to make sure that you will not catch something from them??
Thanks
Good question Dianne! You know how when you bake a cake you first butter the pan and then dust it with flour? With thrifted shoes, I first wipe down the inside with a Lysol wipe ( or a lot of people just use Lysol spray ) and after that dries I sprinkle foot powder in it.
Thanks for reading! 🙂
I’m loving those black boots in the last few pics!! Just saying. Anyway great haul. Never thought I’d say this but I’m agreeing with your husband!! I didn’t care for that pink multi -colored tunic. Anyway super cute outfits!! Hope you are staying warm and your dad is doing well!!
It’s a good thing I didn’t buy that tunic then! 😉 O…MG! The weather is in the 50’s here in Ohio and Mitch tells me there is 8 inches of snow at home in New Mexico! My dad is doing remarkably well. I will let him know that you asked about him. 🙂
