Thrifty Thrifty Vino Vino

As the days grow cooler and happy hour takes place at twilight, the frosty beverage just doesn’t fit the season. Thrift Town makes is super easy to acquire everything you need for a wine tasting evening with friends or just a nice glass while catching something on television.

Although I don’t think this has ever been scientifically proven, red wine, which is positively enhanced by oxygen, is served in glasses that are wider and deeper allowing greater oxidation. The more delicate white wine is served in glasses with a narrow and shorter bowl. Really narrow bowls may also be champagne flutes – specifically designed to keep all those bubbles bubbly!

Lots of beautiful wine stems for both red and white can be found at Thrift Town for around a dollar – leaving plenty of pecunia for the vino itself. If you want to pick up a couple of bottles to have on hand, investing in an attractive wine rack is really no investment at all as evidenced by these two nice ones priced at $8.99 and $9.99.

Other nice touches are the covered cheese board, and for wines served cold, this pretty ice bucket, and a book of poetry – all under $10!

As for the wine itself, unfortunately Thrift Town can’t help you with that. But remember the words of William Sokolin: the definition of a good wine is one that starts and ends with a smile.

Stephanie F. is a dedicated thrifter whose mantra is, “Buy used – there’s just too much stuff in the world!” She became hooked when she found a pair of sock hop saddle shoes in junior high that she could actually afford with her allowance money (hey, it was a RETRO sock hop!). Today she lives and works in Texas’ capital city doing her part to “Keep Austin Weird.” She’s the author of an Austin blog – The Thrifty Snicker – which lets her prowl local thrift stores while telling herself that it’s not shopping, it’s research!
