College Edition: Thrifty Makeover…Samantha
I hope you guys are enjoying seeing these thrifty makeovers as much as I am enjoying doing them! This time around I am thrifting over a 20 year old!!
Meet Samantha AKA Sami! She is the daughter of friends of mine. She was home for Spring Break and agreed to do this, with a little nudge from her parents.
Sami is a former model, a musician and aspiring astro-physicist at NAU ( Northern Arizona University ).
She is 6’1″… a size 14/16…and a size 11 shoe. As you can probably guess, her number one issue is finding pants that are long enough, and number two issue, cute shoes in her size. Well, I am up for that challenge!!!
As usual, I pre-shopped for close to 90 minutes. I pulled skirts first, then suits, blazers, tops and finally pants. (I had her pull the shoes when she arrived.) Here is a trick one of my tall friends (Cyndi) taught me. When you are looking at the rack of pants, look at the bottom to see which ones are hanging longer than the others. Pretty clever, huh!
When Sami showed up with her parents and saw the buggy of clothes for her to try on, she freaked out a little bit. I don’t blame her…remember, I don’t like to try on clothes either. In fact, see that leopard print? That’s a skirt I pulled for me and I was too lazy to try it on!
Off to the dressing room we went…I chose lucky number seven…and for the next 90 minutes she tried on clothes. Once again, there was a place for everyone to sit, not me of course
outside of the dressing room. It was a really nice kitchen table with six chairs.
Here is one of the outfits she purchased:
This is a Fashion Bug blouson, one shoulder top ($7.99) and a pair of Levi’s jeans ($15.99). Told you I could find her pants that were long enough!
What I forgot to take a picture of her wearing was a beautiful gray Anne Klein pantsuit that I found for her that she also purchased for a mere $12.99.
Okay, back to the thrifty makeover…
Because Sami’s parents are good friends of mine, and Sami is a good sport, I took this process ONE. STEP. FURTHER.
I did her hair and makeup too!!!!
Are you ready for the big reveal?
Here is the ‘before’ again:
Here is the ‘after’:
Don’t you just love it?! I think I outdid myself on this thrifty makeover. Okay, okay…it helps that she is tall, blonde, blue-eyed and beautiful! She definitely knows how to pose too, thanks to all of her modeling experience.
I was super excited that she was willing to let me straighten her hair. She has never done it before. I kept her makeup very natural.
Here are the details of what she is wearing:
Talbot’s tan jacket…$15.99
Worthington blouson top…$3.99
Kenneth Cole Reaction denim skirt…$5.99
Merona metallic cut out flats…$3.99
The accessories: black necklace $4.99 and it was brand new with tags, metallic mesh bracelet with magnetic clasp $4.99 and a pair of black hoop earrings for 99 cents.
This thrifty makeover was a little bit more pricey. It was not a special sale day, and we didn’t have any violet tags that were 50% off…BUT, I did have a $5.00 off coupon which made this total look…$38.80
Are you ready for YOUR Thrift Town thrifty makeover yet?
P.S. Seniors age 60+ still get their 30% off on Mondays! Happy thrifting!
Darlene Fadem is a wife and mother with two sons in college. She’s OBVIOUSLY over 50, hence the name Thrifty Over 50. She admits to being a label hunter when thrifting, but pleads the fifth to everything else.
When she’s not thrifting she is teaching five year olds how to read, write and be fashionable! You can also find her styling looks on her fashion blog for older women http://whosaprettygirl.wordpress.com

I love it!! She looks amazing!!!! Unbelievable what you can find!!!
I think she looks pretty amazing too! Can’t wait to go thrifting with you!
The reveal photo is terrific. But I thought she looked great in her “before” shot, too. She’s a pretty girl! Not a Fashion Bug fan; so much of their stuff is skimpily cut and looks cheap. I do, however, look at thrift shops with a longing eye now!
