Teen Takeover at the Crocker Art Museum
It’s no secret that fashion is my passion, so when I got to teach a class on it to teens recently I jumped at the chance. Starting in March and ending mid April, I had the privilege of teaching a course called: Careers in Fashion: Project Runway. It was a six week course dedicated to teaching the students all about the fashion industry and what it takes to put on a successful fashion show.
Each class was dedicated to one specific sector of the fashion world, from hair/makeup, production, styling, and pulling clothes for an actual show. The purpose of the class was for the teens to actually produce their very own fashion show at the end of the course!
The Project Runway style fashion show was inspired by one of the exhibits we had at the Museum. It was a very colorful abstract show by the artist Sam Francis and that’s what the teens wanted to base the collection off of.
Thrift Town was the first place I thought of to pull clothes. As part of the whole experience, I took the kids on a field trip to Thrift Town and pulled some clothes and accessories! I was over the moon with joy teaching them all about my world and the world of styling and thrifting.
A big thank you to my co-teacher Daphne, Deeda Salon for teaching the hair and makeup, Amber of Cast Images for teaching production, and especially a BIG thank you to Thrift Town for the clothes and accessories. The final part of the class was the big fashion show at our annual Teen Takeover. They did such a fantastic job! I only cried once
