OH BABY: thrifty little one gifting

It’s baby season!

Seems like there’s a baby boom around me and everyone (including myself) is expecting a little one. In the last month alone I’ve received 3 baby shower invites, and the excited “expecting announcements” keep coming…

If you’ve ever shopped for baby gifts, you know how insanely expensive all the gear & clothes are! In shopping for a shower at Thrift Town (with only 10 minutes til closing time) the other day, I was able to seriously score for my friend’s upcoming little girl.

Here’s my finds, and a few tips from me to you:

Based on the baby’s expected due date, make sure you’re buying age-season appropriate clothing. When the baby is making it’s grand entrance in the world in August, resist when you find the CUTEST newborn down jacket. By the time it’s cold out they will be to big to wear it. (These newborn onesies: $0.49 each — under $2 for 3!)

They won’t be newborns forever. It’s actually a really short-lived stage, so don’t go nuts on just newborn clothes. Your friend will get A LOT of those. Get other sizes so they can enjoy their adorable gifts long after the first 2 months. (These 3 month old onesies were only $0.49 each!)

This tip is a personal preference for me — keep an eye out for handmade & vintage pieces. They just seem more special, like not just anyone can run out and buy them at a big box store. BUT you can often find gems like this sweater at Thrift Town (only $0.99): vintage sweater made with love.

These 2 onesies are surprisingly both for a 6 month old baby, but they’re shaped so differently! Here’s a tip: babies, being tiny humans, come in all shapes and sizes, just like larger humans do! You never know if your friend’s baby will be long and lean (L) or short & squishy (R). Try to get them a mix of both.

2 things about this: If it’s a girl baby, try to get at least one thing that isn’t ALL PINK. I know, pink is fun and all (I obviously embrace it) but break it up with some different colors. Second, it’s fun to get a coordinated outfit. I kinda freaked out over these 3 pieces together. And this is for a 9 month old, so baby has most of the first year covered in cuteness by auntie Kari now.

Once you have all the cute clothes, grab a basket in home goods, a kid’s book and a snuggly blanket and you’re still under $20 total for an awesome baby gift!
