How to Build a Look: a Silly Girl's Outfit of Convenience.

I am a silly girl…

I went to a fancy art auction gala, and against my better judgement wore a pair of completely unreasonable heels. Like, REALLY unreasonable. These tall heels that put my feet at a terrible angle all night, and I was (embarassingly) hobbling after a couple hours on my feet at the event. The next morning, I woke up and my feet were less than thrilled with what I’d put them through.

So instead of cute heels and a dress that I would have worn to run my shop for the day, the shoes dictated the look.

As a stylist, a lot of my clients say, “I can’t just envision outfits like you wear. I’d never think to wear that. It doesn’t come naturally to me.” Well, outfits don’t happen all at once. It always starts with pragmatics. And with each look, you’re wanting a mix of color, pattern & textures. Start with functionality and build from there.

Lets do this look: I NEED to wear flat shoes that don’t rub today.
Guess we’re starting with my one pair of non-heeled boots. ($7.99 at Thrift Town)

The boots need skinny jeans or leggings tucked in: dark skinny jeans it is.
I still want to look feminine & balance out the dark on the bottom:
flowy white tiered blouse ($2.99 at Thrift Town!)

Now I’ve got all solid colors, and straps I’d like to cover up, since I’m a business owner running a shop, but it’s also still a bit warm: 1/2 sleeved lightweight cardigan with polka dots for pattern, and to bring together the creme & black of the jeans & top. And just cinch it all in in the middle: Convergence. (belt: ($0.99)

All thrifted, these accessories have just what I’m talking about: personality, color, texture & pattern. Separately, they don’t look like they go together, but add pieces in the right order and it all makes sense. Gold cuff to pull in the color from the boots & match the necklace and a POP of teal for some fun.

Having part of your look that’s personal & sentimental is always a nice touch. Pieces that have stories. This thrifted gold purse necklace actually opens! I carry little bits of love from my niece and best friend inside, making it all the more special.

Hope this helps you with some basic outfit concepts - see you around at Thrift Town!
