DIY Chandelier Makeovers
Ever get the itch to redecorate? I do, especially since I work from my house and am staring at the same things all day every day. I am also a woman, giving me the right to change my mind as often as I change clothes, which means my husband gets a workout moving furniture all over the house…let’s just say “frequently.” I say win-win; my space just got a mini-face lift and my hubby stays in shape. But if you don’t have a Mr. Muscles readily available, and you just have to scratch that redecorate itch, I recommend doing a quick, easy, and cheap chandelier makeover.
Thrifted chandeliers typically cost anywhere between $5-$20 at Thrift Town depending on size and condition. I recently made over three chandeliers for a Good Day Sacramento Thrifty Thursday segment, showing that no matter how hideous the chandeliers are in the store, if they have good bones, and you have vision, great things can happen!
Here’s my first victim. Yeah, wow.
I removed the glass hood, hung the chandelier up on the kid’s play structure in the backyard and spray painted primer onto the brass. Once that dried, I spray painted the whole thing in white. While the chandelier finished drying, I took the socket covers and covered them with scrapbook paper. I added some beads I found in the dollar bin at my local craft store, and bam…my princess got a new chandelier for her bedroom.
Here’s my second victim. I repeat, wow.
I took all the glass off this one as well, though I could have actually made a pottery barn-ish looking thing out of it in hindsight. However, I was thinking farmhouse chic, so I removed all the brass, and spray painted it barn red. I swapped out the lights for a more retro look, and I think it looks pretty darn cute!

Now, for my favorite…victim number three. And again, I repeat, wow.
I took off the bottom part of the light that had a large piece of frosted glass. I spray painted it black. Covered the light sockets with some fabulous harlequin inspired scrapbook paper (I have a weakness for harlequin patterns, especially in black and white), added some ba-bling and feathers to help cover the remaining part of the original base that I could not fully remove, and voila…here’s a beautiful statement piece you could use really in any room; dining room, bedroom, living room.
