A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our Go Green For Prom contest this year! Every year we get more applicants as you all spread the word, making our decisions even tougher. We appreciate each and every one of you who sent in your photos and stories, and are excited to see such a big trend toward recycled prom attire.

Our amped-up prizes this year are a big draw for all you thrift savvy prom-goers. After much deliberation (and EXCITEMENT!) here are our winners for Thrift Town’s 2011 Go Green For Prom Contest!

1st Natalee M.; Albuquerque New Mexico:

Natalee’s story is a true family affair. As a Thrift Town lover, and avid shopper, she and her mom set out to find the perfect dress for her last prom. She had been attending a performing arts school, and has a passion for fashion design. So it was important to her to have a unique, self-designed dress for the big night.

Natalee and her sew-savvy mom worked with the Thrift Town gem (that mom actually found) to create the sweetheart neckline, and vintage-inspired silhouette she was dreaming of. Then Natalee’s aunt and cousin stepped in to do her hair and makeup, completing her glam look for the night out.

Natalee’s self-re-designed dress was such a hit, and so personalized, she decided to put on a fashion show of redesigned looks from Thrift Town for her graduation party. We can’t wait to see the pictures!

Marisa’s story is truly inspiring, and her mom wrote to tell us about her very special daughter. Marisa has autism, and loves thrift shopping. She enjoys treasure hunting for all kinds of items, and picking out her own style of frilly, fun, sparkly clothes. She had never been to a prom. When her mom found out about a local school that put on a beautiful prom night for students with disabilities, she jumped at the chance to have her daughter be a part of the event.

They weren’t able to find the perfect prom dress for Marissa at Thrift Town, but they did find a beautiful silver clutch, bracelet, and shoes. Then they heard about a nonprofit an hour and a half away (perfectly named: Marissa’s Closet!) that supplies secondhand prom dresses to girls who may need them. It was well worth the trip - they found the PERFECT dress for Marisa.

When they found the perfectly pink satin dress, she tried it on and said, “Like a princess”. We couldn’t agree more. Look how beautiful and happy she looks! Congratulations Marisa on your fabulously glam second-hand look, and a wonderful night at your very first prom.

We think this Texas darling is a dead ringer for Taylor Swift, and are happy to know she had a night out like a celebrity in her secondhand dress.

Sarah is a homeschooler who was looking forward to her first dance. She was in love with a dress of her friend’s, and borrowed it for the big event, BUT she had to alter it in order to have it be just right. How does one alter a dress so it can be returned to its owner in the original condition?

Sarah applied her creativity to the task, sewing snaps on the inside of the dress to bring up the too-long hemline, added a bit of fabric to a low-cut back, and shortened the straps a bit. We think the results are stunning!

Sarah had worked hard at altering the dress and still had a bit to do when she got very sick right before prom! She pushed through it, finishing it up just in time for the fever to break, and to rush off to her fairytale night out. *whew!* This goldilocks took matters into her own capable hands to make a prom-worthy dress that fit just right. Congratulations, Sarah!
