Fin-Tastic Halloween Costumes!

As a beach girl, I have always loved all things nautical. I also like incorporating beachy things in my every-day outfits! I have a great pair of fish scale leggings I wear frequently that inspired me to be a mermaid for Halloween! Here’s how I made my mermaid costume!

Scalloped Edge Dress

Step 1: Choose a dress. My leggings are black and teal, so I chose a black tank-dress that I got from Thrift Town for $2.99!

Step 2: Trace a scalloped edge along the bottom hem of your dress.

Step 3: Cut the scalloped edge.

The next thing I did was repaint a cute belt with a layered scale design. I thought a pop of teal would match the leggings better, as well as create a nice contrast against the copper layers.

(I used a $1 bottle of nail polish from my local drug store!)

Next, I added colored glitter to a pair of cute Mossimo suede booties!

Sparkly Shoes

Step 1: Choose a pair of shoes, darker colors tend to work better. I got these at Thrift Town for $5.99! (Stock image via poshmark.com)

Step 2: Mix glitter and Mod Podge. Use different colors and shades to create a dimensional effect!

Step 3: Brush on and let dry! I applied 3-4 coats to achieve an even layer.

Being the crazy cat-lady that I am, I wanted to make a cute matching Halloween costume for my kitty, Olive!

Purrmaid Pet Costume

Step 1: Choose a fabric that is stretchy and breathable. Measure your pet around their shoulders, belly, hips, and tail.

Step 2: Sew a tube using the measurements you just took. Lay it seam-down and cut a “V” into the thinner end.

Step 3: Cut out fish fins and trim for the opening. I used a dark green iridescent fabric!

Step 4: Sew the fins and trim into place, and remember to cut leg holes in the appropriate places! I made it so that my cat’s tail would fit perfectly into the fish tail.

All you have to do now is wear your costumes together!
