Tattooist Thrifting for the Homeless

Christmas is a time for giving.

As much as we focus on getting that perfect gift for friends and family, or having a meticulously Pinteresting holiday home, it’s also a time to turn our hearts to those who have less than we do and give back.

Some people get involved in big charity organizations, flashy toy drives or sponsor kids overseas (all awesome things). Others are very sensibly pragmatic and big hearted and look to fill the needs of those around them.

My very good friend Clifton isn’t typical. He’s not your typical… anything.

Over 40, and a famous tattoo artist, skateboarder in his free time, he chooses to dress thrift/vintage, and TRULY cares about others in need.

While scrolling through instagram on (appropriately) Giving Tuesday, I saw this post from Clifton:

A mutual friend had called him and said, “It’s supposed to be REALLY cold out tonight, wanna go get some warm gear for the homeless with me?” And in calling Clifton, she knew he’d be all over it.

All in all, the pair spent around $170 and bought gloves, jackets, blankets, socks and sweatshirts and headed down to an area in Downtown Sacramento where homeless usually congregate.

What was heartbreaking was to hear Clifton say, “It wasn’t even a drop in the bucket ON THAT CORNER. Not even talking about Sacramento’s homeless population at large.” In under 5 minutes, every item they’d purchased was happily put on by someone who desperately needed it, with more coming as they ran out. It was 30 degrees that night.

Instead of sitting in that helpless feeling, they’re now determined to gather 100 blankets for the people in that area in the next week. I’m personally offering my boutique as a drop-off spot, and gathering blankets myself.

If you’re reading this right now, you’ve got a computer or a smart phone you’re reading it on… my guess is you’ve got your basic needs met. I’d encourage you to get involved in truly making a difference this holiday season. Hit up your local Thrift Town and get something warm for people who don’t have a roof over their heads. Get your kids involved, show them some true holiday spirit.
