What a Find Wednesday; Tole Tray
Thrift Treasures
You’ve probably seen paper mache trays for sale at antique stores, flea markets, and thrift shops. If they truly are antique, they can be worth a pretty penny. Discovering an unexpected treasure at a thrift shop can be one of life’s greatest pleasures. But to truly find a hidden jewel, you really have to know what to look for.
A few months ago, my best friend Gina and I decided to go on a treasure hunt to Thrift Town. Digging thru the plate section I was lucky enough to come across what I thought to be a beautiful tole tray! Sure enough it was stamped on the back “Made in Japan alcohol proof” I started screaming with excitement…I knew I had just found a hidden jewel!
Gina looked at me wondering why I was going so crazy…I showed her my find, and explained to her what I had found. I have been collecting these trays for the last 6 years to decorate my kitchen…and some can be quite expensive! Made in the 1940’s, these type of paper mache trays were made primarily in Japan.
Paper mache, a French word, actually means chewed up pieces of paper. Tole-ware features fruits, florals, and symbols. The trays were mostly painted by amateur artists using the “one stroke” method with the paintbrush loaded with several colors at once. Tray prices can range from $35.00 to thousands depending on age, condition, subject matter, and how well the painted the tray is. Collectors usually look for unusual colors, ones that only have roses, or only black trays.
My $2.99 Thrift Town tole tray is actually about a $40 to $50 tray! The colors of my “new” tray match, and look amazing with the other trays I’ve collected!
Cassie Niklas is the mother of five boys, Hunter (16), Spencer (11), Reichard (8), Grayson (6), Landon (2),…and finally a girl Emerson (1).
