Thrifty Glam: a Vintage Look for under $20

This February has already been a month full of love and celebration. We shared the DIY love last week, and next week, we’re celebrating our 41st anniversary as a company, by passing the savings on to all of you!

don’t know about you, but I love when celebration requires getting all dressed up. If you’re seeing this post Valentine’s Day morning, there’s still time to get inspired and grab something glam at Thrift Town before tonight! If not, plan for that next fancy schmancy outing with secondhand resourcefulness.

I was asked to attend a special Sacramento Ballet Gatsby (1920′s) themed Ball on Sunday. I needed something new and glamorous to wear, but didn’t have a ton to spend. I headed to Thrift Town (cutting it close, the day before the event!) and for under $20 for the entire outfit, was able to pull off a super glam look. I got so many compliments – there’s no way anyone would have guessed it was secondhand, much less under $20.

The main item necessary - the dress. To do a specific period of time for a throwback event, look for the silhouette that fits the time period. The accessories can come later.

This silver/grey velvet floor length dress was $12.99. I know, right?? With a super low back, and the front a bit revealing as well, I added to it a LONG silver sheer panel of fabric, and brought both sides together at the bust with a vintage broach ($1.99).

I then looked up tutorials on YouTube for vintage hair and makeup. Red lipstick for sure! Not sure I did specifically 1920′s but it worked for the vintage vibe.

For a little extra drama, I threw on my fur collar, and added a black stretchy headband to round out the ’20′s look.
Simple black heels that I’d purchased at Thrift Town forever ago gave me the height I needed with the long dress.
And we were ready to go! I love that I was able to blend in (and stand out!) at such a high end event in my super inexpensive thrifted look!

Here’s a look at the rest of our fabulous evening supporting the Sacramento Ballet.

Fun with lights & shadows.

A few of the ballet dancers, happy everyone came out to support!

SO fun to see girls AND guys get all decked out for a fun night — My friends are FABULOUS!

At the end of an amazing night for a great cause with my best friend/date. I was actually able to style her whole look from pieces she already owned! Vintage hair, makeup and a killer statement necklace go a long way. Here’s to all of you, hoping you have something glam and fabulous to go to soon, so you can show off YOUR thrifty skills!
